Thursday, January 27, 2005 Red Cross assisting multiple families involved in
2 separate overnight fires
The American Red Cross, RI Chapter had a busy evening last night, responding to two fires overnight
and assisting 6 different families -- 14 people in all.
Red Cross volunteers first responded to a single family house fire at 135 Terrace Avenue in Cranston.
One family, including 2 adults and 3 children, was affected. Last night the family opted to stay with neighbors and the Red Cross is working with the family this morning to determine and provide what
assistance is needed.
While volunteers were on scene the Cranston fire, volunteers were called to a multi-unit fire at 178
South Main Street in Woonsocket. Five units/families were affected and the Red Cross is providing emergency shelter and food to 8 adults and 1 child.
The RI Chapter typically spends $1,000 per family of four that it assists. All Red Cross assistance is free,
thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
