Thursday, November 20, 2003 RI Red Cross Family Assistance Center closes --
Volunteers continue to meet with families and provide assistance out of the RI Red Cross office
After three days, the American Red Cross of Rhode Island has closed their Family Assistance Center at
the Comfort Inn in Pawtucket. Volunteers and caseworkers are now working out of the RI Red Cross office at 105 Gano Street in Providence and will continue to privately meet
with families to assess their immediate needs. Any Pawtucket residents in need of assistance are asked to call the RI Red Cross at (401) 831-7700 X104 or X108.
Since the RI Red Cross opened the Center on Monday, they have assisted 24
families – 40 adults and 14 children in all. Eight families remain in area hotels and all are actively searching for apartments. Three families have been placed in permanent housing thus far.
Financial donations are still very much in need to assist the Pawtucket residents
and other Rhode Islanders displaced by fires and other disasters. Donations may made be made online at www.riredcross.org or by calling (401) 831-7700. Checks
made out to the American Red Cross of Rhode Island may be mailed to 105 Gano Street, Providence, RI 02906. Those wishing to donate clothing may do so at the
Salvation Army at 102 High Street in Pawtucket, where they will be held aside for Pawtucket families. Anyone interested in donating furniture may call Kristen Doyle at 270-6092.
The Red Cross of Rhode Island typically spends $1,000 per family of four that it assists. All Red Cross assistance is free,
thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
