RI Red Cross has unusually busy holiday weekend assisting 14 families involved in fires
RI Chapter is very active this week, responding to many fires and helping with international relief efforts in Asia.

The RI Red Cross was very active this past holiday weekend, responding to an unusual number of house fires. Since December 23rd, local Red Cross volunteers have responded to 10 separate house fires and assisted 14 families with food, clothing and shelter – many of them on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Since it costs the Red Cross an average of $1,000 to provide emergency assistance to a family of 4, this holiday weekend has been a costly one for the RI Chapter. Donations are always important, as they receive no federal or state funding to do their work.

Also, an emergency shelter was opened in Portsmouth yesterday in response to the power outage on Aquidneck Island.  The shelter team in Jamestown was on stand-by but did not need to open a shelter.

Meanwhile, RI Chapter staff and volunteers are busy taking phone calls from the public as to how they can help with the tsunami in southern Asia.  The best way to help right now is with a financial donation. It is extremely unlikely any local volunteers will travel to Asia to assist.  With fires happening every 11 hours, this is the height of our fire season and is a busy one for local volunteers.

People wanting to help those affected by the tsunami/earthquake emergency response in South Asia and countless other crises around the world each year may make a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance, and other support to help those in need. Call 1-800-HELPNOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) to make your tax-deductible donation. Checks may be made out to the American Red Cross International Response Fund and sent to the American Red Cross, Rhode Island Chapter, 105 Gano Street, Providence, RI 02906. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.riredcross.org.
